New facts about submarines involved in military operations on Lake Ladoga and the details of building the Road of Life and underwater pipeline in sieged Leningrad became public. Russian Ministry of Defence declassified the documents concerning the events in Leningrad in the run-up to the 75th anniversary of complete lifting of the siege. Amongst other documents, the Order for lifting of the siege, dated January 27, 1944, was made public, RIA Novosti informs. The documents can be found at the website dedicated to the anniversary.

The declassified documents include the maps of sieged blocks of Leningrad, agreements, orders and reports. Thanks to these, it is impossible to imagine in detail how the decisions about the winter road construction on Lake Ladoga were made, and how it was carried out. Numerous documents also relate to the construction of the pipeline along the bottom for fuel delivery to the city.

The disclosure of previously unknown information about the Soviet submarines involvement in the fightings nearby Leningrad became a real sensation. Submarines played a great role at that time through monitoring and protection activities and executing military tasks without being noticed by enemy. Documents clarified that the submarines were transported by rail, being disguised as different cargo. The tasks of submarines’ crews can be found in commanders’ reports that have also been declassified.
