The University of Damascus has to build a new Russian language campus, TASS reports. According to Fatima Shaal, the dean of the university's humanities department, the increased popularity of Russian language is the reason for it.

She notes that there are sixteen language departments in the university with about 100,000 students. The Russian language department is the largest. A separate building for the department was decided to be built for students' convenience. Russian is a very complicated language and distance learning is impossible, the dean explains. The communication with native speakers is necessary and the university invites Russian teachers.

Now, the university welcomes again young people whose education was interrupted by war. Many students voluntarily decided to defend their house from terrorists. Some moved abroad as refugees along with their families. It is gratifying that in this academic year some of them will continue their studies since they returned home.

Some of the students were in the territories occupied by the militants, now they want to continue their studies. Each of them should continue from the course corresponding to their knowledge. A program has already been prepared in the way to help them to catch up.

In addition, according to the dean, a psychological support service was organized in the university for those who need it after their experience during the war. A few days ago, 1,500 students from the liberated Douma and Daraa applied. They need help to integrate into the student community. Before this, special services will check them as radical Islamists conducted aggressive propaganda in the occupied territories.

About a year ago the Russkiy Mir foundation opened the Center for Russian Language Study (Russian Center) at the University of Damascus.
