Results of applications’ submission over the last 2 years for the
Read Russia Award have been summoned up. The award is aimed at encouraging specialists to advance translations of the Russian literature abroad.
Translators are awarded for the best translation from Russian into a foreign language. The translation must be issued by one of the foreign publishing houses within the last two years.
As the Russkiy Mir Foundation reported earlier, the best translators will be called in 4 nominations: Classics of the Russian Literature of the 19th century, Literature of 20 century, Modern Russian Literature and Poetry. Almost all the languages of the international communications were included into the list of languages for translation of the national writers’ books.
Overall, for the period of 2017 – 2018, the organizers registered 178 applications from 33 countries. The most part of the applications was sent by British, Spanish, American and French publishing houses. The majority of applications are directed for Literature of the 20th century nomination (the books published before 1990) and Modern Russian Literature (the books published after 1990) nomination.
A long-list of the candidates is to be announced next month. A composition of the jury will be revealed then. Names of translators to go to the finals will be known at the end of August. The gala awarding ceremony will become a part of The 5th International Translators’ Congress to be held this autumn in Moscow.
Earlier the award was handed out in 2016. Hoanin Fernandes-Valdes from Spain, Selma Asira from Mexico, Lisa Hayden from the US and a translator from Italy Claudia Skandura from Italy were nominated for the award back then.
