Diplomats deny claims about Russia’s interference with Brexit referendum

26.10.2017

PA Wire/PA ImagesBritish Parliament’s intention to study alleged influence of Moscow on Brexit voting results and parliament elections astonishes, according to the head of Russian Embassy in London Alexander Yakovenko. He believes, that Russia has absolutely nothing to do with it, RIA Novosti informs.

The diplomat has reminded that the referendum about exclusion of Great Britain from the European Union has been conducted by the previous members of the country’s government. David Cameron was the Prime Minister from the conservative party at that time.

Yakovenko has noted that in case Russia is accused of causing the present state of affairs, we need to answer a question of what the Great Britain’s government represents. We can hardly imagine that somebody in Russia could influence the government of Great Britain, Russian Ambassador has claimed.
Earlier one of the parliament members called parliament and election committee for checking the legitimacy of finances allocated for Brexit voting. Overall concern regarding foreign and Russian influence in particular on Western democratic processes has urged him to make this decision.

At present, it has been revealed that the parliament members approached Mark Zuckerberg with a request to check presence of Russian influence in Great Britain.
