St. George Ribbon campaign St. George Ribbon campaign starts today

St. George Ribbon campaign has been launched today, RIA Novosti reports. This tradition is more than ten years old and people can get this Soviet victory in WWII symbol until May 9. As per Rossiya Segodnya International News Agency Director General Dmitry Kiselev, almost ninety countries will join the event this year.

Rossotrudnichestvo coordinates this campaign abroad. It is very popular in Moldova, Belorussia, Armenia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. It is conducted on a large scale in Serbia, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Greece. There is great interest to it in Vietnam, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Israel, India and China.

US will join the campaign too – the most active participants will be in New York and Washington. St. George Ribbons will be distributed in Canadian cities too. Such Latino-American countries as Argentina, Brazil, Nicaragua and Cuba will organize the campaign.

Afghanistan, Macedonia, and Montenegro will host the campaign for the first time this year.

The distinctive feature of the campaign this year is quiz about history of St. George Ribbon. Volunteers will conduct it before handing out the ribbon. If people do not answer their questions, volunteers will give them an information sheet together with the ribbon with notes on the history of this symbol.

The campaign will take place in the Baltic States and in Ukraine too despite the authorities of these countries do not welcome this symbol of the historic truth. Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explained that there are no direct bans; however, the attitude towards organizers of this event is very alert.
