Poems to be read at World Poetry Day in Russia

World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21, TASS reports. It was declared by UNESCO in 1999. The main purpose of this holiday is to support and sustain a variety of languages by means of poetic self-expression and creation of necessary conditions for development of endangered languages.

In honor of this holiday, poets-sixties’ verses will be read by actors from The Bridge Theatre in Moscow as a part of the Thaw Project. Contemporary writers will also present their literary works. It should be mentioned that Poet of the Year and Writer of the Year awards ceremony is traditionally arranged at this day. Alla Sharapova and Alexander Shimlovsky received these awards the day before.

Besides, the winners of Young Poets’ competition Green Leaf will be awarded today. The ceremony will take place in Andrey Dementyev’s House of Poetry in Tver. The authors from all across the country will participate in this event. About a thousand of poets aged from 16 to 29 submitted their pieces of poetry for this competition.
