The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is celebrated on Friday, July 8, in Russia, TASS reports. The holiday coincides with the day of memory of the holy faithful Peter and Fevronia of Murom. Since ancient times, the couple has been revered as a symbol of marital fidelity.

The holiday is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. This day was established to preserve family values and spiritual and moral education of the younger generation.

The story of the Murom prince Peter and the daughter of the Ryazan beekeeper Fevronia is described in the ancient Russian chronicle. A girl who lived in the 13th century cured a man of a deadly disease. Having fallen in love with each other, the couple lived together all their lives, despite all the obstacles, and died in one hour. It happened on July, 8.

Traditionally, the ceremony of awarding medals "For Love and Loyalty" is timed to coincide with this day. They are awarded to couples who have been married for many years. Among them are not only Russian families. The honorary award awaits compatriots who now live in Europe, Asia and America. Special services are held in Orthodox churches.
