The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Sergei Gonchar assistant coach

Official NHL websiteEx-defenceman of Russian ice hockey team Sergei Gonchar has become the Pittsburg Penguins Club coach assistant. Before he has accepted a development coaching position within the Pittsburgh Penguins. During two last seasons Gonchar was a large part the Penguins 2016 Stanley Cup championship defense throughout the playoffs and finals.

Gonchar has received the new position after his predecessor Rick Tocchet moved to Arizona Coyotes team.

The head coach Mike Sullivan has mentioned several times that he wants to appoint him for a full-time assistant position but the Russian could not accept the invitation due to the family situation.

Nevertheless, the Pengiuns' GM Jim Rutherford managed to talk him into the game, and Sergei has accepted 3-year contract. Rutherford has stressed that not least because of participation of Goncharov, the defense line of the team was one of the strongest last season.
