Masterworks by Chagall were the main lot at the recent Swann Auction Galleries bids. Swann is New York's oldest specialty auction house founded in 1941. The latest auction was dedicated to the art of the 19 and 20th centuries, TASS reports.

The most expensive lot was the gift edition of the Four Fairytales from One Thousand and One Nights. It includes thirteen colored Chagall lithographs. The album issued by Pantheon Books in 1940s was sold for $270,000. All the lithographs are supported with explanations, and signed by the artist. Auction organizers noted that 70 year-old lithographs are in beautiful condition and the colors are not washed out. In overall, there were more than 30 Mark Shagall lithographs, etchings, and graphics on the auction.

Besides the pieces of Russian-French master, works of Edward Hopper, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, one surrealistic aquarelle Salvador Dali and a canvas of American impressionist Mary Cassatt were sold at this auction.
