The transfer of education into the state language and the refusal to study in Russian had a negative impact on the quality of education in the Baltic country. Latvia has fallen from 5th to23rd place in the ranking of basic skills of schoolchildren published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Sputnik reports.

The major drop occurred despite the significant funds that the EU sends to the country for educational purposes. A drop in the level of education is also noted in Latvia. According to the report of the State Education Content Center, exams record a decline in the level of knowledge of students in Latvian schools.

Teacher training initiatives and programs designed to help improve knowledge of the state language have failed. Latvian politician Ilze Stobova noted that poor grades are due to the fact that many middle and high school students cannot understand the essence of the assignments. There is also a significant shortage of teachers in Latvia; many have quit due to tests on their knowledge of the Latvian language.
