Russia has defeated hunger, says Oleg Kobyakov, head of the Moscow branch of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). According to him, less than half a million people in Russia are undernourished, which is less than 0,3% of the population. The head of the Russian bureau called it a historic victory, RBC reports.

He noted that the problem of hunger is considered quite acute in a world where more than eight billion people live. Of these, more than 800 million were constantly starving a year ago, and it cannot be said that this situation has changed for the better. In addition to them, at least a billion people are deficient in macro- and micronutrients, vitamins. Another billion cannot afford a healthy, nutritious diet.

In Russia, the situation with food security is at a high level, the expert believes.

Oleg Kobyakov noted that every developed country should strive to draw the first billion out of hunger and ensure that the second and third billion begin to eat healthily.
