Russian chess player Alexey Sarana became the winner of the European Championship, which was held in Serbia. The Russian Andrey Esipenko became 8th, R-Sport reports.

The last game in the competition between Sarana and Romanian chess player Kirill Shevchenko ended with a draw, which allowed the Russian to score 8,5 points in 11 rounds and surpass the nearest pursuers. The 2nd place went to Shevchenko, the third - to the Belgian Daniel Dardu.

Sarana became the 12th representative of Russia to win the main prize at the European Championship, which has been held since 2000. The Russian will be awarded a cash prize of 20,00 euros.

A year ago, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in individual tournaments only in neutral status. In February 2023, the General Assembly of the Asian Chess Federation approved the inclusion of the Russian Chess Federation. The transition will be completed on May, 1.
