Mass protests against the demolition of the monument to the Soviet army took place in Sofia, TASS reports. In the morning, a rally was held in front of the entrance to the city administration building, where deputies of the City Council gathered to decide the fate of the monument. Among the protesters were representatives of the left coalition and the Renaissance party, later they were joined by supporters of the Bulgarian socialists.

The participants promised to monitor the monument around the clock to prevent provocations.

Politicians call the intention to demolish the monument vandalism, recalling that the monument is a symbol of victory over fascism. According to the leader of the Renaissance party, Kostadin Kostadinov, if the monument is dismantled, this will mean the victory of fascism. ''We do not want the restoration of fascism in Bulgaria,'' he stressed.

The commission from the Sofia City Council supported the idea of moving the monument two days ago. The matter was referred to the City Council for consideration.

A report on the removal of the monument was presented to the city council several years ago, but it has only now received serious support. Some deputies believe that the monument should be moved, but not destroyed.
