Russia celebrates Defender of Fatherland Day

Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated on February, 23 in some former Soviet republics, events are also held by embassies and compatriots abroad. This year marks the 101st anniversary of the establishment of the holiday. Traditionally, it is celebrated with festive fireworks and events at military memorials. 

The history of Defender of the Fatherland Day has been going on since 1922. The holiday was established on the 4th anniversary of the creation of the Red Army.  In Soviet times, the holiday was called the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. For more than 100 of its existence it has been renamed several times.

On February 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin will honor the memory of the soldiers who fell in battles for their homeland. Traditionally, he lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin wall.

In Moscow, events in honor of Defender of the Fatherland Day will be held from February, 23 to 25. Concerts, exhibitions and sports events have been prepared in parks, museums and cultural centers of the capital.
