The anniversary of the passage of Suvorov's army through the Alps was celebrated in Switzerland, TASS reports. In honor of the memorable date, a festive evening was organized at the Russian Embassy the day before, on September 28. Diplomats from the CIS countries, Russian compatriots and local residents joined its participants.

The highlight of the evening was the screening of "The Hunt for the Field Marshal" documentary. The historical film was shot three years ago by Russian director Sergei Lachin.

In honor of the 223rd anniversary of the event, a flower-laying ceremony was held at the monument to the commander’s companions in the Schölennen Gorge. Wreaths and flowers were laid in Andermatt, Switzerland, the ceremony was attended by citizens of Russia, Belarus and Switzerland, including diplomats, clergymen, and social activists. The Russian Ambassador to Switzerland Sergey Garmonin laid a wreath at the monument.

The diplomat noted the significance of the anniversary of the Alpine crossing of the Suvorov army, emphasizing that the Russian soldiers helped the Swiss gain freedom and independence. The ambassador said that this year the Swiss authorities tried to prevent the holding of a traditional event in honor of the Russian army for political reasons. However, Sergei Garmonin noted, the Russian embassy was able to prove the importance of preserving the memory of the historical event.

At the request of the Swiss authorities, the celebrations were held with restrictions.
