The 90th birthday of the outstanding director Andrei Tarkovsky, who is considered one of the best in the history of world cinema, is celebrated in Russia and the world on April 4.

According to Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, Tarkovsky's prize-winning films will hit the big screen for the anniversary. Gosfilmofond has prepared an extensive educational program about the life and work of Tarkovsky, it will become available in June.

On April 5, the State Literary Museum will open an exhibition about Andrei Tarkovsky, prepared with the participation of the director's sister Marina Tarkovsky. A video dedicated to the director will be shown on the media facade of the Ostankino Tower.

Andrei Tarkovsky was born into the family of the famous poet Arseny Tarkovsky. The future director did not immediately find his vocation - in his youth he studied music, wanted to enter the acting department, studied for a year at the Institute of Oriental Studies and went on a geological expedition.

At VGIK, he became a student of the workshop of the legendary director Mikhail Romm. Andrey Tarkovsky's graduate work The Skating Rink and the Violin won the main prize at the Student Film Festival in New York. His next film, Ivan's Childhood, was awarded at the Venice International Film Festival.

"Andrey Rublev," telling about the fate of the Russian icon painter, became a world sensation, many consider it the best work of the director. Andrei Tarkovsky died in 1986 in Paris.
