Russia celebrates Defender of Fatherland Day

Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated on Wednesday, February 23, RIA Novosti reports, in Russia and a number of former Soviet republics.

This year marks the cenetary of the holiday. It was established in 1922 in honor of the 4th anniversary of the creation of the Red Army. Over the years of its existence, the holiday changed its name several times, for more than 40 years in the Soviet Union it was celebrated as the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. 

Defender of the Fatherland Day is traditionally celebrated in Russia with fireworks. They take place in hero cities and near the headquarters of military districts, fleets, combined arms armies and the Caspian Flotilla.

The President will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden.

On Defender of the Fatherland Day, Russians traditionally honor all men.
