Russia sets an excellent example in activities aimed at reducing smoking and alcohol consumption, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). According to Dr. Kremlin Wickramasinghe, a positive trend in this regard is noticeable in Eastern European countries in general, RBC reports. He noted that the comprehensive approach of the Russian authorities in the fight against smoking and alcohol can become an example for other countries.

The WHO has carefully examined the work carried out in Russia, as the country showed a noticeable decrease in mortality from alcohol. Such results were achieved thanks to the fight against the illegal production of alcoholic beverages, the rise in alcohol prices and the prohibition of alcohol trade at night.

A month ago, the international network of professional audit, valuation and consulting firms FinExpertiza found out that over the past year, the number of smokers among Russians decreased by more than 1.3 million people compared to 2019. In total, tobacco consumption began to decrease in 58 regions of Russia, but in the remaining 27 regions the number of smokers increased by about 600,000 people.
