The Iranian authorities plan to introduce Russian as the second foreign language at schools. This statement was made by the Minister of Education Seyed Mohammad Bathayee, TASS reports.

The main reason for this measure is Iranian Government’s plan to break the monopoly of the English language. The question of introducing the Russian language into the school curriculum was discussed at the meeting of Bathayee with Russian Minister of Education Olga Vasilyeva. He expressed hope that the Russian Minister would support the initiative of the Iranian Parliament and would assist in setting up a bilateral target group on training the Russian teachers.

The Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Education and Science, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Russkiy Mir Foundation Vyacheslav Nikonov believes that this initiative would give Iran a great competitive advantage. Besides, he has remarked that the official language of Iran - Farsi is studied at some Russian universities. Nikonov has also proposed to implement the Iranian language at schools following the example of the Chinese language. In this case, some schools could offer pupils to study Farsi as a second foreign language.
