The concert of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra took place in Carnegie Hall, New York, TASS reports. The long-time Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Yuri Temirkanov was presiding at the conductor's podium. First, the orchestra played Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. This symphony was premiered in 1937 by the same ensemble (which was called at the time Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra) under Evgeny Mravinsky. At the second part acclaimed pianist Nikolai Lugansky joined the orchestra as a soloist in Brahms’ Concerto No. 1.
This recital was a part of Cherry Orchard Festival. As per its organizer Maria Shklover, 90% of the public was American. Maria noted that this event is another proof of the genuine interest in Russian culture in US.
The next city on the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra’s tour list is Chicago, Illinois.
Cherry Orchard Festival is a yearly festival that celebrates 5th year anniversary. This time, Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra under Vladimir Spivakov and celebrated singer Hibla Gerzmava will perform in June. According to the festival name, there’s almost no possibility to escape performing Chekhov, so New Yorkers will enjoy Uncle Vanya play by Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia.
