First Russian House Museum Opens in Australia

08.02.2016

On 7 February 2016, the first Russian House Museum in Australia, created under Australia’s Cossack Village, opened in Sydney.

Thematic exhibitions devoted to Russian immigrants in Australia, the Russian Harbin and Cossacks and Old Believers in Australia were timed to coincide with the museum’s opening ceremony. The project took a lot of time and effort from the museum’s director Mikhail Ovchinnikov, chieftain of the Cossack village, as well as volunteers and sponsors from Australia and Russia.

The ceremony was attended by sponsors, Russian diplomats, members of Russian organizations, public and religious figures from Australia and Russia, and numerous guests. Vyacheslav Nikonov, chairman of the Management Board of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, sent greetings to Mikhail Ovchinnikov.

The opening ceremony was followed by a roundtable and a traditional Russian feast.

The Russian Cossack Ball will be held in Sydney on 12 February to celebrate the occasion.

The museum is located at the following address: 401 Great Western Hwy Wentworthville.
