Bulgarians Protest against American Military Bases

30.01.2015

Representatives of various Bulgarian political parties, civic and patriotic organizations held a debate on the need for American military bases in Bulgaria. The discussion resulted in a resolution against the presence of US military facilities in Bulgaria.

“The Republic of Bulgaria is a sovereign state. There is no need to have US military bases and create a NATO command center and base near Shabla. They are directed against the Russian Federation and other friendly neighboring states. The presence of American military and NATO military groups here greatly threatened the national security of the country, which could be targeted by military counterstrikes and terrorist attacks,” the document says.

The authors of the document propose that all citizens of Bulgaria begin protests against the US training centers, including the gathering of signatures and petitioning of top government officials, national media, electronic mailing, meetings and marches.

The organizations signing the resolution include the Bulgarian Anti-Fascist Union, Union of Bulgarian Writers and Journalists, various Bulgarian political parties, the Bulgarian National Peace Council, War Veterans Union of Bulgaria, Foundation for Sustainable Development of Bulgaria, Bulgaria-Russia forum and other public organizations.
