Three Russians women have advanced to the second round of the Australian Open – Maria Sharapova, Ekaterina Makarova and Alexandra Panova, TASS reports. Ekaterina Makarova reached the second round of the Australian Open with a win over An-Sophie Mestach (6:2, 6:2). Makarova, a two-time quarter-finalist in Melbourne, controlled the opening set against the 20-year-old before sealing the lead in 31 minutes.

In the second round Sharapova will meet compatriot Alexandra Panova, beat Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-0. Makarova will face the winner of the match between Roberta Vinci (Italy) and Bojana Jovanovski (Serbia) on Wednesday.

Other Russian women did not fare as well, as Elena Vesnina, Evgenia Rodnina, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Svetlana Kuznetsova failed to advance past the first round. On the men’s side the Russian hopefuls Mikhail Youzhny, Teimuraz Gabashvili and Alexander Kudravtsev were also defeated during the first round.
