Legendary Russian Opera Star Elena Obraztsova Passes Away

12.01.2015

The world-renowned opera singer Elena Obraztsova has died in Germany at the age of 75. A memorial service for the singer is planned at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, Interfax reports. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to the singer's family and fans, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Obraztsova, a mezzo-sporano, was widely recognized as one of the world’s greatest opera singers. Born in 1939 in Leningrad, she debuted at the Bolshoi in 1964 and then went on to appear in some 100 opera roles, sometimes sharing the stage with other opera legends like Plácido Domingo on such stages as La Scala, the Met, Covent Garden and the Vienna Opera, among others.

In 1975, in Spain during the festival dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Carmen, Obraztsova was named the best performer of Carmen in the world. Obrazstova was awarded a string of honorary titles in Russia in recognition of her career including People's Artist of the USSR (Soviet Union), the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, and the Soviet Union's highest honour, the Order of Lenin.
