Those speaking two languages, or bilinguals, a new reality of post-Soviet space, proved ephemeral. In point of fact it is simply a gradual transition to titular languages while Russian, as a language of international communication, is getting crowded out of everyday use. Unless Russia strengthens its humanities influence in CIS and Baltic nations, from 40% to 90% of youth in CIS won’t speak Russian, says Russkiy Mir portal’s columnist Vladimir Emelyanenko. After five years of absence from Kiev I could not recognize the local residents. Everywhere – except in marketplaces and shops – locals responded in Ukrainian to...

Why should a foreigner travel to Russia? You cannot help thinking about it every time you leave the precincts of the capital city and drive by poor villages, plough lands that have turned into wastelands over bad roads with litter scattered over the roadsides. Why indeed? Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Gold Ring, Volga cruises are traditional destinations established back in Soviet times. Nothing new has appeared and even in the “traditional” places everything is not so smooth: few quality hotels, almost no entertainments while monuments as “the main asset” are far from being in a perfect condition. Substandard living...

Even though the soldiers of comrade Uborevich bore the name of The People’s Revolutionary Army (PRA) of the Far-Eastern Republic (FER), they were actually the combatants of the Red Army. This was corroborated a month later, since already on November 22 the buffer Far-Eastern Republic was included in RSFSR, while PRA transformed into the Fifth Army of RKKA (Red Army of Workers and Peasants). On October 25, 1922, the last White Army corps left Vladivostok. The troops of Lieutenant General Diterikhs evacuated from Primorye on the ships of the Far-Eastern Fleet bound for the Japanese...
