In recent years both in the West in general and in the USA in particular we have seen a revival of interest in Russia and Russian – evidence of a reverse in the trends of the past two decades, when interest in these studies persistently declined and the earlier programs were cut back. The paradox is that those trends were mainly caused by the end of the Cold War, which first led to euphoria and the sense of ultimate ideological victory of the West and triumph of the market democracy model. This was followed by retargeting the foreign policy and strategic services of Western nations towards other regions: the Middle East, Southeast...

An exhibit, declared by its authors to be a “museum blockbuster”, has opened at the Tsaritsyno museum-reserve in Moscow. The focus of the exhibit is Emperor Pavel I and it comes some 250 years after his birth and 200 years since his murder, which earned him the name of Russian Hamlet. As they say in Russia: one death is unavoidable, but two are not to be. This is applicable to any save only Emperor Pavel I, who was murdered once physically and then killed off again historically by practically the same people. He was turned into a fool, a half-crazed, deranged, maniac on the throne, for a hundred years by historians. “He was...

The first scientific meeting of the Academy of Sciences and Arts took place on November 12, 1725. Catherine I, who acceded to the throne a week later, imparted an official status to it, having promulgated a document corroborating the establishment of a Russian academy a la Parisian Academy. Why Parisian? The empress’s late husband Peter the Great was an honored member of the Parisian Academy and highly appreciated that fact. Soon confusion set in. The academy was originally planned as both a research and education center. The ambiguous relationship between researcher and teachers had lasted until the reign of Elizaveta, Peter the...

Any post-election changes in Russia that may transpire will be initiated by the Kremlin, members of the Valdai International Discussion Club concluded at their ongoing 8th conference in Kaluga. Those participating in Tuesday’s discussion session suggested various scenarios for Russia’s post-election development, eventually short listing five or six possibilities. The majority of forum participants believe that Russia is in for a period of authoritarian modernization, in which change will be imposed “from the top” – i.e. from the Kremlin. Supporters of this scenario are convinced that, given the current political...

The exhibit Mount Athos: Images of a Holy Land has opened at the new exhibition hall of the State Historical Museum. Without any exaggeration, there has never been such an exhibit in this venerable museum. The exhibit is centered upon 240 photographs – from views of the natural surroundings and monastery ensemble to sacred rites and portraits of hermits – from the archive of the Simonapetra Monastery, which together with Russian Geographical Society and the Narodnoye Predpriyatie Foundation organized the exhibition. The photos depict the life in all 20 of the monastic residences on Mount Athos over the course of one hundred plus...

The legacy of Bolsheviks and CPSU is diverse and tenacious: from the notorious “gold of the Party” to successful “red directors”, from countless monuments to Lenin to never-ending construction projects. The list is long indeed. Standing apart in this list is the powerful propagandist machine: its first nodes had triggered into action before the coup and continue working even today. Did you hear an old Soviet joke where Napoleon laments in his conversation with Marshal Murat: “If only I had the Pravda newspaper, the world would have never known about my disgrace at Waterloo!” While Pravda is no longer...
