The battle which took place on August 30, 1598, was nothing more than an armed skirmish by modern-day standards, with 400 fighters on one side and slightly more than 500, on the other. In the history of Fatherland countless skirmishes of this sort have occurred! Yet the aftermath of that battle on the banks of river Irmen, a tributary to Ob, was different in scope. That memorable event could be compared to the arrival of soldiers led by Spaniard Cortes in Latin America, the landing of Mayflower colonists on the shores of North America and the results of the First and Second World Wars. On that distant August day a detachment of Russian...

Today the Portfolio Review Russia opens at the Garage Center for Contemporary Art in Moscow. Over the course of five days visitors will have the opportunity to see the works of 185 photographers from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus selected by and international jury. This is the first time that a photography exhibition of this scope and scale is being held in Russia, but the organizers hope it will be a big success and turn into a regular event. Just as similar events in the United States, where the project was initially launched, and in many countries throughout Europe. In addition to the Garage Center, the event is also being supported by RIA...

The German weekly Der Spiegel is publishing materials concerning Mikhail Gorbachev. The documents presented by the publication were copied from the personal archives of the former Soviet president by Russian historian Pavel Stroilov, who presently resides in Moscow. With the help of these materials journalist Christian Neef is attempting to find answers to some long-burning questions: what were Gorbachev’s motives, when did he begin perestroika and why was this experiment a failure? The German journalist also accuses Gorbachev of duplicity and says he was “driven to act by developments in the dying Soviet state and that he often...

When we speak about the origins of the Russian automobile industry, one name comes to mind – Russobalt. Cars of this brand were produced at the Russo-Baltic Wagon Corporation factory in Riga starting in 1908. However, few remember the Russian auto industry had a history predating this. The first automobile of Russian build was presented to the public on July 16, 1896, at the Nizhniy Novgorod Industry and Art Exhibition. It was designed by the Russian engineers Yevgeny Yakovlev and Pyotr Freze. The motor and transmission had been produced at Yakovlev’s factory and running gear and body at Freze’s factory. The construction...

Fifty years ago, June 6, 1961, the Agreement on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the USSR and the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) was signed. Russia unilaterally pulled out of the agreement in the 1990s, and it rarely gets mentioned today. Nonetheless, new progress is being made in relations between these two countries. A decade ago, in August 2001, Kim Jong-Il made his historic visit to Russia. We spoke with Georgy Toloraya, Director of Regional Programs at the Russkiy Mir Foundation and a North Korea expert, about how the ten-year anniversary of this event will be celebrated. – There are...
