Belgium (the Kingdom of Belgium) is a country in western Europe that is bordered by the North Sea and the Netherlands to the north, Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the southeast and France to the south and west. The name comes from the Celtic Belgae tribe that long ago settled this territory. Today, Belgium is one of the leading and most well developed countries in the world. Moreover, Belgium is one of the centers of global and European politics – its capital city of Brussels has rightfully earned the reputation as the capital of Europe given its status as the host of important global and European institutions, as well as the...

We are seldom given cause to contemplate the reign of Fyodor Alekseyevich (Fyodor III, 1661-1682) who ascended to the throne on February 8 (January 29), 1676. Apparently, the tsar who died early suffered as a child from gout and scurvy. To most historians he seemed a copy of Peter I’s co-ruler, Ivan Alekseyevich – a seriously ill man who ended up on the throne only out of chance and leaving no trace in Russian history (unless, of course, we do not consider his daughter Anna). In our opinion, it is impossible to agree with this assessment. Fyodor Alekseyevich was, of course, not a great leader like his younger brother or even his...

On the anniversaries of classic Russian authors, we tend to talk about their day and age. What is the relevance of Pushkin and Dostoevsky? Are Tolstoy or Turgenev modern? Chekhov's turn has now arrived, as it is the 150th anniversary of his birth that we celebrate. The issue has become a virtual ritual. Following tradition, let us then ask – how is Chekhov relevant? The answers to this question are, of course, very different. “Anton Chekhov wrote, above all, about man, about human dignity, about how to get rid of the slave inside us little by little,” said Deputy Minister of Culture Andrei Gagarin in an interview with...

Late last year in Yasnaya Polyana the ashes of Leo Tolstoy’s son Mikhail were reburied. For many years he had lived in Morocco, and it was in the capital city of Rabat that he had died. In the first half of the 20th century, this North African country, at the time a French protectorate, became a second home for many of our fellow citizens, including representatives of prominent aristocratic families who by the will of fate found themselves in this strange land. Later, after Morocco gained its independence, most of the Russians living there dispersed in all directions. Life in the once numerous communities gradually died out. Over...

The last of the pre-revolutionary patriarchs, Adrian, died in Moscow on October 16, 1700. Naturally, everyone expected that the tsar would announce his successor soon after. However, Peter decided to postpone the election of a new primate of the Russian Church, limiting himself to the appointment of Locum tenens of the Patriarchal throne – Metropolitan Stefan Yavorsky of Ryzan and Murom, who had a reputation as a moderate Westernizer and supporter of education. The Locum tenens’ powers were strictly limited, especially when it came to the governance of ecclesiastical fiefdoms. For these purposes, Peter revived the Monastery...
