The study and preservation of Russian language among bilingual children is one of the main focus areas of the work of the Center for Russian Language and Culture “Golden Ring”, which operates in Winnipeg, Canada. The center was created at the Russian school “Svetlyachok”, which this year is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its founding. The teachers of the school and center are constantly searching for new forms which make it possible not only to hold interesting lessons on Russian language and literature but also to reinforce pupils’ knowledge and enrich their vocabulary through the study of other subjects using interdisciplinary connections.
It is the use of interdisciplinary ties that eases the teaching process and stimulates interest among children, thanks to which they begin to make rapid advances and assimilate lots of different information which would not otherwise have been remembered if studied in isolation. Our task is made much easier if the visual learning materials (drawings, graphs and other illustrations) are not the supplementary learning materials but rather the core materials which activate and guide the pupil’s learning activities.
Our children with great enthusiasm take part in various contests. Knowing this, we decided participate in the international environmental contest “Health of the Planet? It’s in My Hands” organized by the Russian public movement “Green Russia”.
The animated film “Our Planet” (Russian school Svetlyachok, Canada)
The youngsters under the guidance of art teacher Yanina Wagner created a clay animation film called “Our Planet”. With the help of the Russian language and literature teacher they learned verses for the audio component of the film and with the help of the music teacher they selected the soundtrack. Of course, during the process of the creation of the animated film they learned many new things about various subjects and new vocabulary and had the opportunity to independently look for verses as part of their homework. At the same time, parents took active part in the process, helping the children with advice, taking them to the library and searching for verses online.
And here is the result: in addition to enriching their vocabulary and raising their level of interest in educational subjects for the teachers who took part in the process, they won the long-awaited first place in the youngest age category! This triumph not only underscored in practice the prudence of using interdisciplinary connections for the teaching of Russian language at Russian schools outside Russia but also demonstrated to parents the importance and use of the study and preservation of the Russian language among children.
