On May 12, a Russian Center of the Russkiy Mir Foundation is opening in the city of Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia. We spoke with Igor Romanov, director of the Russian House in Maribor about the opening of the center and the growing interest in Russian language and culture in Slovenia.
– In Slovenia, the study of the Russian language is on the rise. The largest center for Russian studies is at the University of Ljubljana. The Russian language is taught in 11 gymnasiums and 6 high schools in the country, and linguistic exchanges of university students and schoolchildren are held. Within the framework of the Slovenia-Russia Friendship Society, the Foundation for Facilitation and Support of Russian Language Studies has been created and is actively working, primarily toward the popularization of the study of Russian in high schools and gymnasiums.
As far as Maribor is concerned, both in the city and the district there is a rather large interest in the Russian language and culture among Slovenians of various ages and professions – from schoolchildren to retirees, from service sector workers to major businessmen. Furthermore, Russian-speaking residents of the region who originated from former republics of the USSR are showing interest in Russian language instruction for children from mixed families.
As a part of efforts to develop international cultural and business cooperation, including with Russia, and also taking into account various cultural, arts and sports projects planned for 2012-2013 in Maribor, the city government approached the Russkiy Mir Foundation with a proposal to organize a Russian Center in Maribor.
The partner in organizing the Russian Center is the noncommercial organization Russkiy Dom [Russian House], whose main focus areas are facilitating cultural, scientific and business ties between Slovenia and the Russian Federation, popularization of Russian language, history and the rich multinational culture of Russia. The Russian House will also serve as a platform for the creation the St. Petersburg Information and Business Center, as Maribor is a sister city of the Northern Capital.
We are all very anxious to see the opening of the Russian Center, which is an important event for all who are interested in Russian language and Russian culture in Maribor. High-level guests from Russian and Slovenia have been invited, as have Russian studies specialists, community representatives and journalists.
