International Teachers Forum Issues Resolution

08.11.2010

The International Teachers Forum, which took place as a part of the IV Russkiy Mir Assembly, concluded on November 2, 2010. At the close of the forum the participants adopted a resolution.

The forum, held at Pushkin State Institute of Russian Language in Moscow, gathered approximately 200 Russian language teachers from 55 different countries and nearly 100 teachers of Russian as a foreign language in Russia. Also participating in the forum were representatives of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Rossotrudnichestvo and foreign diplomatic missions in Russia.

The main objective of the forum was to development new areas for international cooperation to meet today’s needs for promoting Russian language and culture outside Russia. In the contemporary multicultural world the study of foreign languages and cultures, and Russian language as a global language, is an important part of intercultural dialog, facilitating the development of tolerance in relation to other peoples and cultures. In this context, there is particular significance in the teaching of Russian language in schools, where the foundation for understanding the language is established and the seeds are sown for continued interest toward Russian language and culture has a part of the world’s spiritual heritage. It is at schools that a positive attitude toward the language as a linguistic phenomenon is formed along with the multifaceted cultural foundation of what we call Russkiy Mir.

A good understanding of the Russian language and the ability to communicate in Russian and fully realize oneself corresponds to life’s needs in the modern world. In the past few years we have seen a noticeable increase in interest in the teaching of the Russian language in schools, which is related to the demands of the labor market: there is a real demand for specialists of a level that is extremely difficult to reach if the learning process begins only at the university level.

Today’s tasks require educational organizers, teachers and methodologists to pay full attention to a wide range of issues:

  • What are the optimal conditions for the functioning of schools with Russian language education in each country; what level of learning can they provide in comparison to the global system of foreign language learning; what place can such schools occupy in the national education systems; what should the correlation between Russian-language instruction and native language instruction be?
  • Organizational and methodological development of a system of Russian schools of the supplemental education format; the aims of such a system, methodological principles of organizing the learning process, specifics of learning materials in consideration of the diverse composition of pupils and low number of hours of teaching
  • The inclusion of Russian language as a foreign language in the educational process of schools outside Russia: the timeframe and aims of such studies, preparation of a new generation of study materials, final certification levels.

These and many other issues were discussed at roundtables held at the forum. Proposals were put forward to address the major issues facing Russian language teachers in Russia and abroad. The importance of such work in unquestionable. The forum participants issued a request that the relevant state education agencies and nongovernmental organizations hold in 2012 in Moscow a World Congress of Russian School Teachers.

One of the most pressing issues today for the development of Russian language instruction in school systems is the creation of private schools with instruction provided in the Russian language in many countries throughout the world. In this regard, the forum participants made a proposal to hold a conference organized by Rossotrudnichestvo for representatives and teachers of such schools.

The forum participants expressed their gratitude to the organizers of the event: the Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russkiy Mir Foundation, Rossotrudnichestvo, and Pushkin State Institute of Russian Languages.

Ukrainian authorities have launched a persecution campaign against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), the biggest one in the country's modern history. Over the past year, state sanctions were imposed on clergy representatives, searches were conducted in churches, clergymen were arrested, criminal cases were initiated, the activity of the UOC was banned in various regions of the country, and monasteries and churches were seized.
When Nektary Kotlyaroff, a fourth-generation Russian Australian and founder of the Russian Orthodox Choir in Sydney, first visited Russia, the first person he spoke to was a cab driver at the airport. Having heard that Nektariy's ancestors left Russia more than 100 years ago, the driver was astonished, "How come you haven't forgotten the Russian language?" Nektary Kotlyaroff repeated his answer in an interview with the Russkiy Mir. His affinity to the Orthodox Church (many of his ancestors and relatives were priests) and the traditions of a large Russian family brought from Russia helped him to preserve the Russian language.
Russian graffiti artists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, and Nizhnevartovsk took part in an international street art festival in the capital of Chile. They decorated the walls of Santiago with Russian and Chilean symbols, conducted a master class for Russian compatriots, and discussed collaborative projects with colleagues from Latin America.
Name of Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko is inscribed in the history of Russian theater along with Konstantin Stanislavski, the other founding father of the Moscow Art Theater. Nevertheless, Mr. Nemirovich-Danchenko was a renowned writer, playwright, and theater teacher even before their famous meeting in the Slavic Bazaar restaurant. Furthermore, it was Mr. Nemirovich-Danchenko who came up with the idea of establishing a new "people's" theater believing that the theater could become a "department of public education."
"Russia is a thing of which the intellect cannot conceive..." by Fyodor Tyutchev are famous among Russians at least. December marks the 220th anniversary of the poet's birth. Yet, he never considered poetry to be his life's mission and was preoccupied with matters of a global scale. Mr.Tyutchev fought his war focusing on relations between Russia and the West, the origins of mutual misunderstanding, and the origins of Russophobia. When you read his works today, it feels as though he saw things coming in a crystal ball...
