Prominent Russian artist Natalia Nesterova passed away

15.08.2022

Honored Artist of Russia, Professor Natalia Nesterova has passed away after a long illness. She was 78, Interfax reports.

The artist died on August, 10 in a foreign clinic.

Natalya Nesterova was born in 1944 in Moscow. In 1962, she graduated from the Surikov Moscow Art School, then studied at the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute.

In the first half of the 1970s, Nesterova rose to fame with her works that altered the standard of the socialist realist figurative-plot painting: heroic and idyllic scenes of work and rest were replaced by images of an enchanted kingdom. Since the late 1970s, the themes of an ancient city or park, as well as religious motifs prevailed in the artist's works.

In 1992, Nesterova became a professor at the department of scenography at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts.
