Russia sent almost 200 tons of sunflower oil worth about $1 million to Nicaragua within the framework of the World Food Program (WFP) under the auspices of the UN, TASS reports. Nicaragua received the cargo the day before, on August 16. The oil will be sent to educational institutions.

The aid transfer ceremony was attended by UN representatives, Nicaraguan officials, and Russian Ambassador Alexander Khokholikov. The head of the Russian diplomatic mission noted that Russia supports efforts aimed at creating decent conditions for children to stay in the country's schools.

Laureano Ortega Murillo, Nicaragua's investment adviser, thanked Russia for its help and confirmed the government's policy of strengthening humanitarian cooperation with Moscow.

Last year, Russia sent almost 2,000 tons of wheat flour and about 800 tons of sunflower oil to Nicaragua. Moscow also donated more than 200,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine to the country.
