The Glazgow Beatson Institute, which specializes in cancer research, has apologized to a Russian student who was previously denied admission because of her nationality, RIA Novosti reports.

The story was covered by The Guardian, the name of the student was not disclosed. The Russian woman was told in a letter from the educational institution that she was denied a place to study for a doctoral degree due to a change in the university's policy towards Russian citizens.

One of Britain’s most prestigious research institutes representative has noted that this is due to a ''misunderstanding of these restrictions'', and at the moment it has been eliminated. The educational institution reported that they apologized to the Russian woman and allocated her a place. The incident prompted the university to revise its rules.

The Guardian mentioned a similar case at the University of West London, where they also refused admission to a Russian applicant, explaining this by ''the situation in Ukraine.'' Later, the university recognized the letter as erroneous.
