The Riga authorities decided to demolish the monument, perpetuating the memory of the soldiers who were the first to begin the liberation of the city from the invaders, TASS reports with reference to the Delfi website.

City parliamentarians approved the demolition of the obelisk of the 374th Infantry Division. In addition, they decided to eliminate the memorial stone, which is installed on the shores of Lake Kish. It marks the place where the lake was crossed. Soviet troops crossed it on October 13, 1944. Every year in October, a reconstruction of these events is carried out. The monument has been repeatedly attacked by vandals.

Earlier, Riga passed a law ordering the dismantling of 300 Soviet monuments throughout the country by November, 15. The Latvian parliament also approved the dismantling of the Riga monument to the soldiers-liberators, interrupting the agreement with Russia on the protection of monuments. Access to the monument was closed, and the flowers laid on it on Victory Day were removed with a tractor.
