The leaders of Russia, Iran and Turkey held a summit in the Astana format in Tehran. They discussed the situation in Syria and the ways to resolve it, TASS reports. In their opinion, the Astana format that plays the main role in ending the Syrian conflict. In addition, they are going to expand the trilateral format of interaction and strengthen coordination in all areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin highly appreciated the work in this format. However, he has no doubt that additional measures are needed to stabilize the situation in those areas that are not yet subordinate to the official Syrian authorities. Putin believes that the territory beyond the Euphrates should return to the control of Damascus.
Moscow, Ankara and Tehran reaffirmed their belief that the conflict in Syria cannot be resolved militarily. The efforts of the Syrians themselves are needed to develop the political process.
The Presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey confirmed the intention to counter separatism in Syria, which, according to Putin, is fueled from outside. The countries of the Astana format will continue the joint fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Putin stressed that it is necessary to put an end to the presence of terrorists and extremists in Syria.
The President of Russia noted that external forces are trying to use Syrian fighters to solve their own selfish geopolitical tasks, including outside the Middle East.
The next tripartite summit at the invitation of Vladimir Putin will be held in Russia.
