The Russian authorities have expanded the sanctions list of Japanese citizens who are prohibited from entering the country. As the Russian Foreign Ministry explained, almost 400 deputies of the Japanese parliament are now under sanctions. The decision comes into force on July, 14.

The MFA noted that members of the House of Representatives made groundless accusations against Russia in the context of the military special operation in Ukraine.

The decision was a response to the sanctions imposed by Tokyo against many State Duma deputies three months ago.

Earlier, more than 60 Japanese citizens fell under Russian sanctions. The list includes representatives of the Japanese governemt, starting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, politicians, journalists and others.

In response to the imposition of sanctions against Russia, Moscow refused to continue negotiations with Tokyo on the issue of concluding a peace treaty. In addition, Moscow canceled visa-free visits of the Kuril Islands for Japanese citizens. Moscow also announced its withdrawal from the Russian-Japanese dialogue, which discussed the establishment of joint economic activities on the southern islands of the Kuril chain. Russia promised to block the extension of Japan's status as a partner of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization for sectoral dialogue.
