Riga has refused to hand over the monument to the soldiers-liberators of the city to the Leningrad Region, TASS reports. Earlier, the head of the region Alexander Drozdenko made a corresponding request. The proposal to take in the monument was sent to Riga in mid-May, when it became known about the plans of the city authorities to demolish the memorial.

Riga explained that according to the new law, the monument must be dismantled, which means that the object should no longer exist. Therefore, the city authorities cannot hand over the monument to anyone.

Riga passed a law requiring the dismantling of 300 Soviet monuments throughout the country by November 15. Earlier, the Latvian parliament had already removed obstacles from the dismantling of the Riga monument to the soldiers-liberators by breaking the agreement with Russia on the protection of monuments.

According to State Duma deputy Olga Zanko, Latvia is trying to destroy even the memories of the Great Patriotic War.
