The Estonian government did not support the suggestion to ban for Russians and Belarusians living in the country from voting in local elections. The corresponding proposition came from the Isamaa opposition party, TASS reports.

The draft law was opposed by the Minister of Justice of Estonia, Maris Lauri, who did not like that the initiative was supposed to prevent all foreigners from voting, since the citizens of the United States, Great Britain and other countries also live Latvia.

Currently, the country's voters include more than 70,000 Russian citizens and more than 62,000 foreigners from other states.

According to the laws of the country, in addition to Estonian citizens, persons with passports of EU states and other countries who have a long-term residence permit or the right to reside can vote in local elections.
