The meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers took place the day before, on May 19. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in it. The summit was held online, the ministry reports.

The participants exchanged views on the most important topics of the current agenda, including regional conflicts, counteraction to new challenges and threats that appear in the world.

Sergey Lavrov provided a detailed assessment of the situation in Ukraine, and spoke about the development of the military special operation. The ministers of the BRICS countries expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis that could engulf Ukraine and even go beyond the borders of the country. They supported the efforts of the UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other structures aimed at providing humanitarian assistance.

In a document adopted at the end of the summit, the heads of the foreign ministries voiced their support for the talks between Moscow and Kyiv, which are currently almost non-existent. They called for counteracting the arms race, abandoning the militarization of outer space and strengthening control over the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. The ministers also called for international peace and security.

The participants showed interest in the possible expansion of the BRICS. China suggested launching this process, believing that this would increase the association's influence and help make a greater contribution to development in the world. At the moment, the BRICS consists of five states - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The meeting was followed by a BRICS Plus format session. The Foreign Ministers of Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, OAE, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Thailand took part in it.
