The monument of gratitude to the Red Army will remain on the main square of Olsztyn, Poland, TASS reports. The mayor of the town, Piotr Grzymowicz, banned the dismantling of the monument. He did not allow the monument to be moved to another location either.

According to him, the residents of the city wanted the monument to stay. This is evidenced by the results of sociological research. The survey showed that almost a third of the population of Olsztyn approved of the decision to remove the monument. At the same time, 46% of the population hold the opposite opinion.

The monument was erected in the center of the town in the middle of the last century. Its author was the sculptor Xavier Dunikovsky, a former prisoner of Auschwitz. 30 years ago, the monument was renamed. Now it is called the Warmińsko-Mazury Land Liberation Monument.

About 60 monuments are planned to be demolished in Poland.
