International Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated on Thursday, January 27, Parliamentary newspaper writes. It is dedicated to the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by Soviet troops. The date was established by the UN General Assembly in 2005.

A commemorative event in honor of this date is held every year at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center in Moscow. The organizer of the memorial action is the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia. Such actions help preserve the memory of the millions of lives that became victims of the inhuman crimes of fascism.

Auschwitz was not only the largest, but also the most terrible death camp. Most of the prisoners of the "factory of death" lived there for no more than a few months. They died not only because of inhuman working conditions, hunger and cold, but also from the most severe punishments and monstrous "medical experiments."

About six million Jews became victims of the Holocaust.

The key event of the Week of Remembrance will be the presentation of the Keepers of Memory award. The award recognizes outstanding people who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. The ceremony will be held for the 4th time.
