Memory of Russian sailors honored in Egypt

The memory of Russian sailors was honored in Port Said (northeastern Egypt.) The sailors died in 1917 when "Peresvet" battleship was lost by a German mine, the Russian Embassy in Egypt writes on Facebook.

The ceremony in memory of those who died for the Fatherland during the First World War has become traditional. The employees of the diplomatic mission laid flowers at the graves of the sailors. Russian Ambassador Georgy Borisenko, officers of the military attache and members of their families took part in the action.

The "Peresvet" battleship was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It participated in the Russian-Japanese War, was sunk, then raised by the Japanese and included in the Japanese fleet. In 1916, Russia bought it backn. The ship set off on its last voyage in the late autumn of 1916. In December, it ran into German mines off the coast of Port Said. According to some reports, passing French ships and an English destroyer rescued more than 550 sailors out of 809 on board.
