The Sputnik V vaccine can be quickly adapted to resist a new strain of coronavirus found in Africa, says Kirill Dmitriev, who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), RIA Novosti reports.

Yesterday, the British experts announced that a new strain of coronavirus emerged in Botswana. It counted more than 30 mutations. Some of them indicate resistance to vaccines and high transmissibility. In addition, scientists believe that the new strain has greater changes in the spike protein than other variants of COVID-19.

According to the World Health Organization, experts have already begun to study how mutations of the new strain affect vaccines and diagnostics.

Vaccination is the most reliable method of protection against coronavirus. According to the Ministry of Health, in Russia, the percentage of vaccinated among seriously ill with COVID-19 does not exceed 0,003 percent. Most of the patients who are in hospitals are those who have not been vaccinated.
