The Royal Ballet has altered the Arabic dance scene in Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, TASS reports. The change was introduced due to the concern that the references to a harem may be offensive.

During the show a few days ago, three dancers and one ballerina were replaced by a duet. The theater said that this way the performances ''fresh and inclusive to a broad audience."

Earlier, the Scottish Ballet announced its intention to introduce some changes to The Nutcracker. It was decided to abandon the choreography and costumes of Arabic and Chinese dances in order to rid the production of "outdated and racial artistic content."

The Nutcracker is one of the most popular choreographic performances in the world. It is especially in demand on the eve of the New Year and Christmas holidays. In many countries, a family trip to the theater to see the Nutcracker has become a tradition.
