The United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) world organization to be headed by a Russian for the first time in history. Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin is going to take the post of its president, TASS reports.

The elections were held during a meeting of the UCLG executive bureau. More than 400 mayors, vice-mayors and heads of regions from Europe, Asia, Africa, South and North America took part in it.

The elections were held due to the early resignation of Mohamed Boudra, who left the post of mayor of Al-Hoceim (Morocco). The organization can only be headed by the incumbent mayor.

Metshin proposed to change the system of interaction between cities and regions within the framework of UCLG and to provide assistance to small towns that are in a difficult financial situation during the pandemic.

It is the first time the representative of Russia was elected the head of UCLG. Previously, it was headed by Mayor of Lisbon Jorge Sampaio, Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoe, Mayor of Istanbul Kadir Topbash, Mayor of Johannesburg Mfo Parks Tau.
