The monument to the first cosmonaut of the planet has been installed in Nicaragua, RIA Novosti reports. The opening ceremony of the monument to Yuri Gagarin was timed to celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of the space era: the 60th anniversary of the first flight into space. The monument adorned the territory of the Peace Park in Managua.

Russian Ambassador Alexander Khokholikov, cosmonaut Fedor Yurchikhin, representatives of the city authorities took part in the opening ceremony. They were joined by members of the delegation of the Russian Southwestern State University. The university has long been working with Nicaraguan scientists on the joint launch of nanosatellites.

A monument to Gagarin was recently installed in Portugal.

The 60th anniversary the first flight into space is symbolically honored by installation of 60 monuments in 50 countries.
