Several cases of infection with the AY.4.2 delta coronavirus strain have been recorded in Russia, RIA Novosti reports. Kamil Khafizov, a scientist working for Rospotrebnadzor (the Russian consumer protection agency,) considers the possbility of its widespread distribution quite probable.

Earlier, the British authorities admitted that the new variant of the "delta" strain, which can potentially be more infectious than the previous one, was spreading in the kingdom.

Khafizov explained that the new strain represents only one of many delta lineage mutations.

According to experts, it is impossible to say with absolute certainty that it was this mutation that caused an increase in the number of coronavirus infections in different countries.

However, it is likely that the mutation will give rise to an increase in the incidence of the disease. The leading means of fighting the virus is vaccination. It is especially important that those who have not yet been sick are vaccinated, the expert noted. Kamil Khafizov assured that the drugs used in Russia are quite effective against the new mutation.
