The Operalia World Opera Competition has started today in the Russian capital, TASS reports. It was initiated and inspired by the famous opera singer Placido Domingo.

Every year a new location is chosen for Operalia. Last year, it took place in Prague's National Theater. Ten years ago, it was hosted by the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. This year, the competition is taking place on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater.

The organizing committee received 100 applications, only a third of them was selected for the competition. Opera soloists from European, Asian and other countries are going to fight for the victory. Russia is represented by nine people.

Placido Domingo, who has been the artistic director of Operalia for almost 30 years, believes that his main task is to find young talents. He is confident that the victory will give a new impetus to the development of their career. Traditionally, the jury includes well-knowninternational opera managers and casting directors.

Operalia’s goal is to attract singers aged 18-32, of ''all voice types from and all over the world.''

The results of the competition will be announced on October 24. The finalists are going to take part in a gala concert on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater along with Placido Domingo.
