Fundraising launched in UK to install monument to Russian aviation pioneer

The Russian Heritage in the UK society has announced a fundraising appeal for the memorial of Russian aircraft designer and military pilot Sergey Oulianine.  A century ago, Oulianine was buried in London's Ladywell Cemetery. The cross installed on his grave is now broken and needs to be replaced.

Sergei Oulianine was the eighth Russian to receive a pilot's diploma. He invented many devices and mechanisms, including a kite for aerial photography, a collapsible plane, a radio controlled boat, and others.

He headed the aviation department of the Officer Aeronautical School, and the Military Aviation School in Gatchina after that. In the fall of 1917, he was appointed head of the Air Force Directorate. The following year, Oulianine was sent to the UK to organize an aviation information mission. Later, he emigrated to this country and died in London in 1921. 

The total sum needed to install a new monument is £1200.
